Fundamental Duties from "summary" of Indian Polity by M. Laxmikanth
The concept of Fundamental Duties is enshrined in Part IV-A of the Indian Constitution, which was introduced by the 42nd Amendment Act of 1976. These duties were inspired by the Constitution of the erstwhile USSR. The Fundamental Duties were added to the Constitution on the recommendation of the Swaran Singh Committee. These duties aim to inculcate a sense of discipline and respect for the nation among the citizens. The Fundamental Duties are not enforceable by law, but they are considered fundamental in the governance of the country. The duties serve as a reminder to the citizens to uphold the ideals and integrity of the nation. The duties are intended to promote a sense of responsibility and patriotism among the people. They are also meant to remind citizens that their rights are inseparable from their duties. There are currently eleven Fundamental Duties listed in the Constitution. These duties include respecting the Constitution, cherishing the noble ideals of the freedom struggle, striving towards excellence in all spheres of individual and collective activity, and promoting harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood among all people of India. Other duties include safeguarding public property, protecting the environment, and developing a scientific temper. The Fundamental Duties are a crucial part of the Constitution as they emphasize the importance of civic responsibility and ethical conduct. They remind citizens that their rights come with certain responsibilities towards the nation and society. The duties are a reflection of the values that the framers of the Constitution deemed essential for the progress and well-being of the country.- The Fundamental Duties serve as a moral compass for the citizens of India, guiding them towards fulfilling their obligations towards the nation and society. While not legally enforceable, these duties play a significant role in shaping the conduct and mindset of the people, fostering a sense of duty and commitment towards the country.
