Directive principles of state policy from "summary" of Indian Polity and Constitution Book by Mocktime Publication

The Directive Principles of State Policy are guidelines or principles given to the government by the Constitution of India. These principles are aimed at ensuring social and economic justice, promoting the welfare of the people, securing a fair distribution of wealth, and creating a just and equitable society. Though not enforceable by any court, these principles are fundamental in the governance of the country and are crucial for the functioning of a democratic society. The Directive Principles are enshrined in Part IV of the Indian Constitution and are inspired by the Irish Constitution. While fundamental rights are justiciable, meaning they can be enforced by courts, the Directive Principles are non-justiciable, meaning they cannot be enforced by courts. However, they are nevertheless important as they provide a roadmap for the government to follow in making laws and policies. The Directive Principles cover a wide range of issues, including social justice, economic welfare, international relations, and environmental protection. Some of the important Directive Principles include the provision of equal pay for equal work, the promotion of educational and economic interests of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other weaker sections of society, and the protection of the environment and wildlife. These principles are not meant to be read in isolation but are to be read in conjunction with the fundamental rights guaranteed to citizens. While fundamental rights provide for individual liberties and freedoms, the Directive Principles focus on the collective well-being of society as a whole. They are meant to guide the government in making policies that promote the welfare of the people and create a just and equitable society.
  1. But they are nevertheless binding on the government. The government is expected to strive towards achieving these principles and work towards creating a just and equitable society. In this way, the Directive Principles play a crucial role in shaping the policies and laws of the country and in ensuring the overall welfare and well-being of the people.
