Chola dynasty was a powerhouse in South India from "summary" of India: The Ancient Past by Burjor Avari

The Chola dynasty, which ruled over parts of South India from the ninth to thirteenth centuries, is considered a powerhouse in the region. The Cholas were known for their military prowess, administrative efficiency, and cultural achievements. Under their rule, the Chola dynasty expanded its territory through conquests and diplomatic alliances, establishing a vast empire that encompassed much of present-day Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. One of the key factors that contributed to the Chola dynasty's success was their strong military organization. The Chola kings maintained a well-trained army that was supported by a network of forts, garrisons, and supply lines. This enabled them to defend their borders against external threats and launch successful campaigns to conquer new territories. The Chola navy was also a formidable force, allowing the dynasty to control trade routes and establish maritime dominance in the Indian Ocean. In addition to their military strength, the Chola rulers were known for their efficient administrative system. They divided their empire into provinces, each governed by a viceroy who was responsible for collecting taxes, maintaining law and order, and overseeing local affairs. The Chola kings also appointed officials to manage the royal treasury, maintain records, and administer justice. This centralized system of governance helped the dynasty to maintain stability and prosperity within its territories. The Chola dynasty was also a patron of the arts and literature, fostering a vibrant cultural environment that produced great works of poetry, music, dance, and architecture. The Chola kings built magnificent temples, including the Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They also supported the development of the Tamil language and literature, commissioning literary works and encouraging scholarly pursuits.
