Women’s participation in freedom struggle from "summary" of India's Struggle for Independence by Bipan Chandra,Mridula Mukherjee,Aditya Mukherjee,K N Panikkar,Sucheta Mahajan

The role of women in India’s struggle for independence was significant and multifaceted. Women from all walks of life participated actively in various stages of the freedom movement. They played a crucial role in shaping the course of the struggle through their involvement in different activities and organizations. Women’s participation in the freedom struggle was not limited to a particular region or social background. Women from urban as well as rural areas, belonging to different social and economic strata, contributed to the movement in their own ways. They organized protests, participated in marches and demonstrations, and played a crucial role in spreading awareness about the injustices of colonial rule. One of the most notable aspects of women’s participation in the freedom struggle was their involvement in the non-cooperation and civil disobedience movements. Women actively participated in boycotts of foreign goods, picketing of liquor shops, and spinning movements. They also played a significant role in underground activities, such as distributing pamphlets, providing shelter to underground activists, and even engaging in armed struggle in some cases. Women also played a crucial role in the formation and functioning of various nationalist organizations. They joined political parties, such as the Indian National Congress and the Communist Party of India, and actively participated in their activities. Women leaders like Sarojini Naidu, Annie Besant, and Aruna Asaf Ali emerged as prominent figures in the freedom movement, inspiring millions of women to join the struggle for independence. In addition to their involvement in political activities, women also contributed to the social and cultural aspects of the freedom movement. They organized women’s associations, set up schools and colleges for girls, and worked towards the upliftment of marginalized sections of society. Women writers, poets, and artists used their creative talents to inspire and mobilize people for the cause of freedom.
