The Poona Pact was an agreement reached between Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, representing the depressed classes, and Mahatma Gandhi, representing the Congress, in September 1932. The British government had earlier announced the Communal Award, granting separate electorates to the depressed classes. This decision was opposed by Gandhi, who began a fast unto death to protest against it. The Poona Pact was a compromise between the two sides, as Ambedkar agreed to give up the demand for separate electorates in exchange for reserved seats for the depressed classes within the general electorate.
