Social reforms were implemented to address inequalities from "summary" of India After Gandhi: The History of the World's Largest Democracy by Ramachandra Guha

Social reforms were implemented to address inequalities that had been ingrained in Indian society for centuries. These reforms aimed to bring about a more just and equitable society, where individuals were not discriminated against based on their caste, religion, or gender. One of the key social reform movements in India was the campaign against untouchability led by leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi believed that untouchability was a social evil that needed to be eradicated in order to create a more inclusive society. He called for the upliftment of the so-called "untouchables" and worked to ensure that they were given equal rights and opportunities. Another important social reform movement was the fight for women's rights. Women in India had long been marginalized and discriminated against, with limited access to education, employment, and political participation. Reformers such as Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Pandita Ramabai worked tirelessly to improve the status of women in Indian society, advocating for their right to education, property, and political representation. Additionally, social reforms were also implemented to address the economic inequalities that existed in Indian society. The Zamindari Abolition Act, for example, sought to dismantle the feudal system of landownership that had kept millions of farmers in a cycle of poverty and indebtedness. Land reforms were also introduced to redistribute land more equitably among the rural population.
  1. Social reforms in India were aimed at creating a more just and egalitarian society, where all individuals had equal rights and opportunities. While progress has been made in some areas, there is still much work to be done to address the deep-rooted inequalities that continue to persist in Indian society.
