Avoid foodlike substances from "summary" of In Defence of Food by Michael Pollan
When it comes to food, it may seem like common sense to choose items that closely resemble real, whole foods. However, in today's modern food environment, this can be easier said than done. Many products on supermarket shelves are designed to look like food but are actually highly processed foodlike substances. These products are often stripped of nutrients during processing and then fortified with synthetic vitamins and minerals to make them appear more nutritious. The problem with foodlike substances is that they are typically high in refined sugars, unhealthy fats, and artificial additives. These ingredients can wreak havoc on our health, leading to obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses. In contrast, real food, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, provides essential nutrients that our bodies need to function properly.
