Denying our emotions doesn't make them disappear from "summary" of If Only I Had Told Her by Laura Nowlin
Suppressing our feelings may seem like a solution, a way to avoid dealing with the pain or discomfort they bring. We believe that if we ignore our emotions, they will eventually fade away, leaving us untouched. However, this is far from the truth. In reality, trying to bury our feelings only makes them grow stronger, like weeds left untended in a garden.
Just as a wound left untreated can become infected and spread, unaddressed emotions can fester inside us, causing more harm than good. They may manifest themselves in unexpected ways, influencing our thoughts, actions, and relationships without us even realizing it. By refusing to acknowledge our emotions, we are essentially giving them power over us, allowing them to control our lives in subtle but significant ways.
Furthermore, denying our feelings can lead to a sense of disconnection from ourselves. We may start to feel like strangers in our own bodies, unable to understand or express what we are truly experiencing. This lack of self-awareness can create a barrier between our inner selves and the outside world, preventing us from forming genuine connections with others and hindering our personal growth.
In order to truly move forward and heal, we must confront our emotions head-on, no matter how uncomfortable or painful they may be. By acknowledging and accepting our feelings, we can begin to process them in a healthy way, gradually releasing their hold on us. Only by facing our emotions with courage and compassion can we hope to find peace and understanding within ourselves.
