Shelter will need to withstand harsh conditions from "summary" of How We'll Live on Mars by Stephen Petranek

To survive on Mars, shelter will be a critical component. However, the shelter will need to be able to withstand the harsh conditions that exist on the red planet. These conditions include extreme temperature fluctuations, intense radiation, and powerful dust storms that can last for days. One of the key challenges of building shelters on Mars is the extreme temperature variations. During the day, temperatures on Mars can reach a relatively mild 70 degrees Fahrenheit. However, at night, the temperature can plummet to a bone-chilling -100 degrees Fahrenheit. This drastic shift in temperature will require shelters to be well-insulated and able to maintain a comfortable temperature for its inhabitants. In addition to temperature fluctuations, shelters on Mars will also need to be able to protect against the intense radiation that bombards the planet's surface. Mars lacks a protective magnetosphere like Earth's, leaving its surface exposed to harmful cosmic rays and solar radiation. Therefore, shelters will need to be constructed with materials that can shield against these harmful radiation rays to protect the health of those living inside. Another challenge that shelters on Mars will face is the threat of powerful dust storms. These storms can whip up winds with speeds of over 60 miles per hour and can blanket the planet in a thick layer of dust. Shelters will need to be able to withstand these powerful winds and prevent dust from infiltrating the living spaces.
  1. The shelters on Mars will need to be designed with these harsh conditions in mind. They will need to be able to withstand extreme temperature fluctuations, protect against intense radiation, and withstand powerful dust storms. By carefully considering these challenges, we can ensure that future Mars settlers have a safe and comfortable place to call home.
