Humans will evolve to adapt from "summary" of How We'll Live on Mars by Stephen Petranek

The harsh conditions on Mars will inevitably force humans to evolve in order to survive. Our bodies will have to adapt to the lower gravity, the lack of a protective atmosphere, and the high levels of radiation present on the Red Planet. Over time, our bones will become more fragile due to the decreased stress caused by the lower gravity. Our muscles will also weaken, as they will no longer need to work as hard to support our weight. In addition, our immune systems will have to become stronger in order to combat the increased levels of radiation that we will be exposed to on Mars. Without the protection of Earth's atmosphere, we will be much more susceptible to harmful cosmic rays. Our bodies will need to develop new ways of repairing DNA damage and fighting off infections in order to survive in this hostile environment. Furthermore, our respiratory systems will have to adapt to the thin atmosphere on Mars. The lack of oxygen will make it much harder for us to breathe, forcing our lungs to become more efficient at extracting oxygen from the air. This adaptation will be crucial for our survival, as without it, we would quickly suffocate in the thin Martian atmosphere.
  1. The challenges of living on Mars will push humanity to evolve in ways that we cannot even imagine. Our bodies will undergo drastic changes in order to adapt to the extreme conditions of the Red Planet. Only those who are able to evolve and adapt quickly will have a chance of surviving on Mars in the long term.
