With the collapse of the Roman Empire, the intellectual and cultural achievements of the ancient world seemed to disappear. The once-great cities of Rome and Athens lay in ruins, their former glory faded into memory. As Europe descended into the Dark Ages, it seemed that all hope of intellectual advancement was lost.
