The criminal justice system disproportionately impacts marginalized women from "summary" of Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall
The criminal justice system continues to be a battleground where marginalized women find themselves on the losing side. Whether it's being over-policed in their communities or facing harsher sentences for the same crimes as their white counterparts, the system perpetuates cycles of injustice against these women. For Black women, the stakes are even higher as they face not only racial discrimination but also gender discrimination within the system. The intersection of race and gender compounds their experiences, leading to higher rates of incarceration and harsher treatment behind bars. Financial disparities further exacerbate the situation, as marginalized women often lack access to quality legal representation. This means they are more likely to plead guilty to crimes they did not commit or accept plea deals that result in longer sentences. Once incarcerated, these women face a myriad of challenges, from inadequate healthcare to lack of support for their families on the outside. The system fails to address their needs, further marginalizing them and making it harder for them to reintegrate into society upon release. Moreover, the impact of incarceration goes beyond just the individual woman - it affects her family, her community, and future generations. The cycle of poverty and incarceration is perpetuated, creating a system that continues to disproportionately harm marginalized women. In order to address these issues, we must recognize the systemic inequalities at play and work towards dismantling the structures that perpetuate them. It is only through a holistic and intersectional approach that we can begin to truly achieve justice for all women, especially those who have been historically marginalized by the criminal justice system.Similar Posts
