Poverty is a feminist issue that impacts women disproportionately from "summary" of Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall

Poverty is not just an abstract concept to be discussed in academic circles or political debates. It is a harsh reality that affects millions of women every day, disproportionately burdening them with its weight. When we talk about poverty through a feminist lens, we must acknowledge that women bear the brunt of its impact in ways that men do not. Women, especially those from marginalized communities, face unique challenges that exacerbate the effects of poverty. The wage gap, lack of access to healthcare, childcare, and affordable housing are just a few examples of the structural inequalities that keep women trapped in cycles of poverty. These issues are further compounded for women of color, transgender women, and disabled women, who experience even greater disparities in income and resources. The intersectionality of poverty and feminism is crucial to understanding the depth of the problem. Women of color, for instance, are more likely to live in poverty than their white counterparts, due to historical and systemic racism that limits their opportunities for economic advancement. Transgender women face discrimination in the workplace and healthcare system, making it even harder for them to escape poverty. Disabled women often struggle to find employment and access social services that could help lift them out of poverty. Recognizing poverty as a feminist issue means acknowledging the ways in which gender, race, sexuality, and ability intersect to create unique challenges for women living in poverty. It requires us to center the experiences of those most affected by these intersecting oppressions and work towards solutions that address the root causes of their economic hardship. Only by understanding and addressing the complexities of poverty through a feminist lens can we truly create a more just and equitable society for all women.
