To prevent chaos, individuals must give up some freedoms to a sovereign authority from "summary" of Hobbes: Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes

In a state of nature, where there is no common power to keep individuals in check, life is said to be "nasty, brutish, and short." This is the essence of chaos that Thomas Hobbes describes in Leviathan. Without a sovereign authority to enforce laws and maintain order, people are driven by their own self-interests, leading to conflict and violence. To prevent such chaos, individuals must give up some of their freedoms to a sovereign authority. This authority, in the form of a government or ruler, acts as a Leviathan - a powerful entity that keeps individuals in line and ensures peace and security. By relinquishing certain freedoms, individuals are able to live in a society where their rights are protected and conflicts are resolved through a system of laws and justice. Hobbes argues that this social contract, where individuals agree to submit to the authority of a sovereign in exchange for protection and order, is necessary for the survival of society. Without this contract, there would be constant strife and instability, making life unbearable for all. While it may seem counterintuitive to give up freedoms in order to achieve peace, Hobbes believes that it is a small price to pay for the benefits of living in a civil society. The alternative, a state of nature characterized by chaos and violence, is far worse than any loss of individual liberty.
  1. The concept of individuals surrendering some freedoms to a sovereign authority is a fundamental principle in Hobbes' Leviathan. It is through this social contract that order is maintained, justice is upheld, and society is able to function harmoniously. Without this agreement, the consequences of living in a state of nature are too dire to comprehend.
