The book of Exodus tells the story of the Israelites' departure from Egypt. After centuries of slavery, the Israelites cry out to God for deliverance from their oppressors. God hears their cries and sends Moses to lead them out of Egypt. Moses, after some hesitation, confronts Pharaoh with God's demand to release the Israelites. Pharaoh refuses, and God sends a series of plagues to persuade him to let the Israelites go. After the tenth and final plague, the death of the firstborn, Pharaoh finally relents and allows the Israelites to leave. The Israelites depart in haste, taking with them only what they can carry.
