Loss is a beast that never leaves. It's greedy and it's gluttonous. It takes and takes and takes until there's nothing left. When we lose something or someone we love, it feels like a piece of us has been ripped away. We're left with an emptiness that can't be filled. We try to go on with our lives, but the pain lingers like a shadow, always there, always reminding us of what we've lost. Some people turn to drugs or alcohol to numb the pain of loss. They try to escape reality, to forget even for a moment the emptiness that consumes them. But the drugs and the alcohol only offer temporary relief. They can't fill the void left by loss.
