Coping with loss from "summary" of Heavy by Kiese Laymon

Loss is a beast that never leaves. It's greedy and it's gluttonous. It takes and takes and takes until there's nothing left. When we lose something or someone we love, it feels like a piece of us has been ripped away. We're left with an emptiness that can't be filled. We try to go on with our lives, but the pain lingers like a shadow, always there, always reminding us of what we've lost. Some people turn to drugs or alcohol to numb the pain of loss. They try to escape reality, to forget even for a moment the emptiness that consumes them. But the drugs and the alcohol only offer temporary relief. They can't fill the void left by loss. They only mask the pain, pushing it down deeper until it festers and grows into something even more destructive. Others turn to self-destructive behaviors in an attempt to cope with their loss. They punish themselves for not being able to prevent the pain, for not being able to save what was lost. They engage in risky behaviors, seeking solace in danger and chaos. But this only serves to compound their pain, adding guilt and shame to an already heavy burden. But there are those who choose a different path. They face their loss head-on, acknowledging the pain and allowing themselves to grieve. They seek out support from loved ones, from therapists, from anyone who will listen. They understand that healing takes time, that it's a messy, painful process. But they also know that it's the only way to truly move forward, to find a way to live with the loss instead of being consumed by it. Coping with loss is not easy. It's a battle that we fight every day, a struggle to find meaning and purpose in the face of overwhelming pain. But it's a battle worth fighting. Because on the other side of loss, there is healing. There is hope. And there is the possibility of a future where the pain no longer defines us.
