Riddle's diary was a Horcrux, containing a piece of his soul that had been possessing Ginny Weasley, causing her to open the Chamber once again. Harry realized that he could speak Parseltongue, the language of snakes, just like Riddle. He entered the Chamber to save Ginny, facing the Basilisk in a fierce battle.
In the Chamber, Harry encountered Tom Riddle's memory, who revealed his true identity as Lord Voldemort. Riddle intended to use the Basilisk to rid the school of Muggle-borns.
