Mr. Gradgrind, the embodiment of utilitarianism, believed that happiness was a frivolous indulgence that had no place in the practical world of facts and figures. He preached the gospel of hard work and self-denial, instilling in his children a sense of duty that left no room for joy or spontaneity.
