In Coketown, the workers are treated as mere machines, devoid of any human emotions or needs. They are expected to work tirelessly, without respite or care for their well-being. The factory owners see them as a means to an end, a way to increase their profits without any regard for the workers themselves. The workers are reduced to mere numbers on a ledger, easily replaceable if they become sick or injured. The dehumanization of workers is further exemplified by the harsh working conditions they must endure. They are forced to work long hours in dangerous environments, with little regard for their safety.
