Agriculture allows for sedentary lifestyles from "summary" of Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies (20th Anniversary Edition) by Jared Diamond

The shift from a nomadic lifestyle to a settled existence was made possible by the development of agriculture. With the ability to grow their own food, people no longer needed to constantly move in search of sustenance. Instead, they could stay in one place and cultivate crops year after year. This newfound stability allowed for the establishment of permanent settlements, leading to the development of complex societies. By staying in one location, people were able to build more permanent structures, such as houses and storage facilities. This in turn led to the accumulation of possessions and wealth, as well as the division of labor within societies. With some individuals specializing in farming while others took on different roles, societies became more complex and stratified. Furthermore, the surplus of food produced through agriculture enabled populations to grow larger. This increased population density, in turn, facilitated the exchange of goods and ideas between different groups. As settlements grew into towns and eventually cities, trade networks expanded, leading to the spread of technology, knowledge, and culture. The ability to store food also played a crucial role in the development of sedentary lifestyles. With surplus crops able to be preserved for times of scarcity, communities were no longer solely dependent on seasonal foraging or hunting. This allowed for a more reliable and consistent food supply, which in turn supported population growth and societal advancement.
  1. The practice of agriculture revolutionized human societies by enabling the transition from a nomadic way of life to a sedentary one. This shift laid the foundation for the development of complex civilizations, as people were able to settle in one place, build permanent structures, accumulate wealth, and facilitate trade and cultural exchange. Agriculture not only allowed for sedentary lifestyles but also paved the way for the rise of modern human civilization.
