Let go of excess possessions from "summary" of Goodbye, Things: The New Japanese Minimalism by Fumio Sasaki
When we hold on to excess possessions, we are essentially burdening ourselves with unnecessary weight. These possessions may have served a purpose at some point, but as time goes on, they become nothing more than clutter in our lives. By letting go of these excess possessions, we free ourselves from the mental and physical strain of having to constantly manage and maintain them. Minimalism is not about depriving ourselves or living a life of lack. Rather, it is about focusing on what truly brings value and joy to our lives. By decluttering and simplifying our surroundings, we create space for the things that matter most to us. This could be relationships, experiences, or personal growth. When we let go of excess possessions, we also let go of the expectations and pressures that come with owning them. We no longer have to keep up with the latest trends or compete with others based on material possessions. Instead, we can focus on cultivating a sense of contentment and fulfillment from within. It can be challenging to part with possessions, especially if we have attached sentimental value to them. However, it is important to remember that memories are not tied to physical objects. By releasing ourselves from the emotional attachment to these possessions, we can truly appreciate the memories and experiences they represent.- Letting go of excess possessions is a liberating experience. It allows us to live a more intentional and mindful life, where we are not weighed down by the burden of material possessions. Embracing minimalism opens up a world of possibilities and allows us to focus on what truly matters in life.
