Traditional values should not be dismissed in higher education from "summary" of God and Man at Yale by William F. Buckley
The dismissal of traditional values in higher education is a grave mistake that threatens the very foundation of our society. By turning away from these time-honored principles, we are essentially severing ourselves from our roots and losing sight of the values that have shaped our civilization for centuries. Traditional values such as respect for authority, dedication to learning, and a sense of moral responsibility are not relics of the past, but rather essential components of a well-rounded education. Without these guiding principles, students are left adrift in a sea of relativism, unsure of what to believe or how to navigate the complexities of the modern world. Higher education should not be a place where tradition is discarded in favor of the latest trends or fashionable ideologies. Instead, it should be a place where students are challenged to think critically, engage with diverse perspectives, and grapple with the fundamental questions that have occupied great minds throughout history. When we dismiss traditional values, we do a disservice not only to ourselves but also to future generations who will inherit the consequences of our shortsightedness. By upholding these values in higher education, we ensure that students are equipped with the tools they need to navigate an increasingly complex and uncertain world. In the words of William F. Buckley, "A society which is predominantly oriented toward the cultivation of autonomous individuals is unlikely to be able to preserve, transmit, and perpetuate an educated class, or a society of individuals who have assimilated the lessons of the past and translated them into habits of behavior and thought." It is only by embracing traditional values that we can hope to preserve the legacy of our forebears and pass it on to future generations.Similar Posts
