Ethical considerations are important when caring for elderly patients from "summary" of Geriatric Nursing by Priscilla Ebersole, RN, PhD, FAAN,Theris A. Touhy, ND, APRN, BC
Ethical considerations play a crucial role in the care of elderly patients. As nurses, it is our responsibility to uphold ethical principles and values when providing care to this vulnerable population. One important ethical consideration is respect for autonomy. Elderly patients should be given the opportunity to make decisions about their own care whenever possible. This includes respecting their right to refuse treatment or interventions that they do not want. In cases where patients are unable to make decisions for themselves, nurses must act in their best interest while still considering their values and preferences. Another ethical consideration is beneficence, or the duty to do good. Nurses must strive to provide the highest quality of care to elderly patients, taking into account their unique needs and circumstances. This may involve advocating for patients, ensuring they have access to necessary resources, and advocating for their rights. Nonmaleficence, or the duty to do no harm, is another important ethical consideration in caring for elderly patients. Nurses must be mindful of the potential for harm in their actions and decisions, and take steps to minimize risks to patients. This may involve careful monitoring of medications, preventing falls, and ensuring a safe environment for patients. Justice is also a key ethical consideration in the care of elderly patients. Nurses must ensure that care is equitable and fair, taking into account the needs of all patients and advocating for those who are marginalized or vulnerable. This may involve addressing issues of ageism, discrimination, and access to care.- Ethical considerations are essential in caring for elderly patients. By upholding ethical principles such as respect for autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice, nurses can ensure that they are providing the best possible care to this vulnerable population.
