Grip fight control from "summary" of Fundamentals of Judo by Dr. Rajender Singh
Grip fighting is a crucial part of judo, as it determines who has the upper hand in a match. Understanding the importance of strong grips can help a judoka gain an advantage over their opponent and increase their chances of success.- To successfully execute grip fighting to maximum advantage, practitioners must coordinate body movement with their grips. A practitioner should attack as soon as they have successfully secured a standing position and gained superior grip on their opponent.
- It is widely accepted that gripping and getting control of your opponent is key in most forms of combat sports such as judo, wrestling and jujitsu. Control can be achieved most effectively from strong grips on the back, centre or lapel of an opponent's uniform.
- In order to maintain the superiority of your own grip, protective reflexive movements such as featuring head down and kneeling forward may be used so that no points are conceded by weak or inadequate grip maneuvers.
- Arm movement should be coordinated and included with secure stepping to maximize results as well as momentum for more effective attacks. Momentum created by arm movement should ideally be utilized as an offensive strategy as it reinforces the overall purpose of getting a dominant grip.
