We often attribute success to skill rather than luck from "summary" of Fooled by Randomness by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
When we witness someone achieving success, we are quick to assume that it is due to their superior skills or abilities. We rarely stop to consider the role that luck may have played in their accomplishments. This tendency to attribute success to skill rather than luck is a common cognitive bias that can lead us astray. In reality, success is often the result of a combination of skill and luck. While skill certainly plays a role in determining outcomes, luck also exerts a powerful influence. Random events and chance occurrences can have a significant impact on the outcome of any endeavor, no matter how skilled or talented the individual may be. However, our minds are wired to seek patterns and causal relationships, even where none exist. This leads us to overlook the role of luck and instead focus on the individual's skills and abilities. We prefer to believe that success is a direct result of effort and talent, rather than acknowledging the role that randomness and chance may have played. This bias can have serious consequences, as it can lead us to overestimate our own abilities and underestimate the role of external factors in shaping outcomes. It can also lead us to make poor decisions based on faulty assumptions about the nature of success and failure.- We can become more humble and realistic in our assessment of success. We can also become more attuned to the role of randomness in our lives and make better decisions as a result. Ultimately, by acknowledging the role of luck in success, we can avoid being fooled by randomness and make more informed choices in our own lives.
