Our perception of success and failure is often clouded by selfdeception from "summary" of Fooled by Randomness by Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Our minds are wired to create narratives that make sense of the world around us. We tend to attribute success to our skills and intelligence, while blaming failure on external factors or bad luck. This self-deception can lead us to overestimate our abilities and underestimate the role of randomness in our outcomes. When we experience success, we are quick to take credit for it and assume that we have control over our circumstances. We ignore the role of luck and randomness in our achievements, preferring to believe that our skills and efforts are solely responsible for our success. This cognitive bias can inflate our ego and make us overconfident in our abilities. On the other hand, when we encounter failure, we are reluctant to accept responsibility and tend to blame external factors or bad luck. We refuse to acknowledge the role of randomness in our failures, choosing instead to protect our self-esteem by shifting the blame elsewhere. This self-deception can prevent us from learning from our mistakes and improving in the future. By recognizing the influence of randomness in our lives, we can gain a more accurate understanding of success and failure. We can learn to appreciate the role of luck in our achievements and take a more humble approach to our accomplishments. This awareness can help us make better decisions and avoid the pitfalls of self-deception that can cloud our judgment.
