I have a complicated relationship with vegetables from "summary" of Food: A Love Story by Jim Gaffigan
Vegetables. They're like the distant relatives you see only on holidays. You know you should spend more time with them, but there's always an excuse not to. They sit on your plate, staring at you with their judgmental eyes, making you feel guilty for choosing that extra slice of pizza instead. It's a love-hate relationship, really. You love the idea of being healthy and nourishing your body with all the vitamins and minerals they have to offer. But when it comes down to actually eating them, it's a different story. I mean, who wants to munch on a raw carrot when there's a warm, gooey brownie calling your name? Vegetables are like the responsible friend who always has your best interest at heart, but you just can't seem to connect with on a deeper level. You try to force yourself to eat them, thinking it will make you a better person. But let's be real - it's hard to get excited about a plate of steamed broccoli.
And don't even get me started on kale. Kale is like that overachieving cousin who always makes you feel inadequate. Everyone seems to be singing its praises, claiming it's a superfood that will change your life. But every time you take a bite, you can't help but wonder if they're all part of some big conspiracy to make you suffer.
But despite all this, you know deep down that vegetables are good for you. You know that they play a crucial role in keeping you healthy and energized. So you make an effort to include them in your meals, even if it means hiding them in a smoothie or drenching them in cheese. It's a constant battle between your taste buds and your conscience, but you soldier on, hoping that one day you'll finally learn to love vegetables for who they are - not just for what they can do for you.
