Flow involves a merging of action and awareness from "summary" of Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

In flow, a person becomes so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience itself is so enjoyable that people will do it even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it. This state is what we call optimal experience, and it represents perhaps the highest form of human fulfillment. What makes an experience genuinely satisfying is a state of consciousness called flow. During flow, people typically experience deep enjoyment, creativity, and a total involvement with life. Flow involves a merging of action and awareness; it is a state of heightened focus and concentration. In this state of flow, people are able to perform at their best because they are fully immersed in the task at hand. Their actions seem to happen effortlessly, without the need for conscious thought or effort. Flow is characterized by a loss of self-consciousness and a feeling of being completely absorbed in what one is doing. When in flow, individuals are not concerned with the outcome of their actions; they are simply focused on the present moment. Flow is a state of mind in which individuals are fully engaged with their environment and are able to respond to challenges with ease. Flow allows people to experience a sense of control over their actions and a feeling of mastery over their environment. The key to experiencing flow is to find activities that are challenging yet attainable. When a task is too easy, people become bored and disengaged; when it is too difficult, they become anxious and overwhelmed. Flow occurs when the level of challenge matches the individual's skill level, creating a state of optimal experience. By seeking out activities that provide this balance, individuals can increase the likelihood of experiencing flow in their daily lives.
