Cultivate selfcompassion in times of fear from "summary" of Fear by Thich Nhat Hanh
In times of fear, it is essential to cultivate selfcompassion. When fear arises, our first instinct may be to resist it or push it away. We may try to distract ourselves or numb the uncomfortable feelings that come with fear. However, this approach only serves to deepen our suffering. Instead of rejecting our fear, we can choose to embrace it with kindness and compassion. Selfcompassion is the practice of treating ourselves with the same care and understanding that we would offer to a dear friend. When we are confronted with fear, we can extend this same compassion to ourselves. We can acknowledge our fear without judgment or criticism. We can hold ourselves with tenderness and care, recognizing that fear is a natural and universal human experience. By cultivating selfcompassion in times of fear, we create a space for healing and transformation to take place. When we approach our fear with kindness and compassion, we soften its grip on us. We begin to see that fear is not our enemy but a messenger, inviting us to look deeply and understand ourselves more fully. Selfcompassion allows us to stay present with our fear without being overwhelmed by it. We can hold our fear gently, like a fragile bird in our hands, and observe it with curiosity and compassion. Through this practice, we can learn to befriend our fear and discover the wisdom and insight it has to offer. In cultivating selfcompassion in times of fear, we also deepen our connection to others. When we extend kindness and understanding to ourselves, we become more compassionate and empathetic towards others. We recognize that fear is a shared human experience, and we can offer support and comfort to those who are struggling with their own fears.- Cultivating selfcompassion in times of fear is an act of courage and wisdom. It is a radical act of self-care that has the power to transform our relationship with fear and bring us greater peace and freedom. When we approach fear with kindness and compassion, we open the door to healing and growth, both for ourselves and for those around us.
