Pride can blind us to the faults of those we love from "summary" of Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff

Throughout the novel, the characters' pride often prevents them from seeing the faults of their loved ones. This blindness is particularly evident in the relationship between Lotto and Mathilde. From the outside, their marriage seems perfect, with Lotto adoring Mathilde unconditionally. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Lotto's pride in his wife blinds him to her manipulative and secretive nature. Lotto's pride in Mathilde is rooted in his belief that she is his muse and savior. He sees her as the key to his success and happiness, and this pride prevents him from questioning her actions or seeing her flaws. Mathilde, in turn, takes advantage of Lotto's adoration to further her own agenda, secure in the knowledge that his pride will shield her from scrutiny. Mathilde's own pride is equally blinding. She is determined to maintain the façade of perfection in her marriage, going to great lengths to hide her past and her true intentions from Lotto. Her pride in her ability to manipulate him blinds her to the harm she is causing, both to Lotto and to herself. The theme of pride blinding us to the faults of those we love is further illustrated in the relationships between other characters in the novel. From Chollie's blind loyalty to Lotto, to Gawain's refusal to see the truth about his daughter, each character is unable to see the faults of their loved ones due to their own pride.
  1. Groff's exploration of this theme serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked pride in relationships. It is a reminder that love alone is not enough to sustain a healthy partnership, and that true understanding and acceptance require us to see past our own pride and acknowledge the faults of those we love.
