The sugar industry has funded research to downplay the risks of sugar from "summary" of Fat Chance by Robert H. Lustig

The sugar industry has a lot to lose if people start to see sugar for what it truly is—a toxic substance that is making us sick. So, what do they do? They fund research that conveniently downplays the risks associated with sugar consumption. This is not a new tactic; the tobacco industry used the same strategy for decades to keep people addicted to their deadly products. By pouring money into studies that support their agenda, the sugar industry is able to create confusion and doubt in the minds of the public. One of the key ways they do this is by promoting the idea that all calories are created equal. In other words, they want us to believe that it doesn't matter where our calories come from, as long as we don't exceed our daily limit. This oversimplified view ignores the fact that different types of calories have different effects on our bodies. Sugar, for example, is metabolized differently than other nutrients. It causes a rapid spike in blood sugar and insulin levels, leading to a host of metabolic problems. To make matters worse, the sugar industry has also funded research that shifts the blame away from sugar and onto other factors, such as lack of exercise. While it's true that physical activity plays a role in overall health, it is not the sole culprit in our obesity epidemic. Sugar, with its addictive properties and harmful effects on our metabolism, deserves a large share of the blame. By funding research that downplays the risks of sugar and shifting the focus onto other factors, the sugar industry is able to protect its profits and keep us hooked on their products. It is up to us, as consumers, to see through their tactics and make informed choices about what we put into our bodies. Only then can we break free from the grip of the sugar industry and reclaim our health.
