On the morning of September 11, 2001, United Airlines Flight 93, a Boeing 757 with forty-four people on board, was headed from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco, California. At 9:28 a. m., the plane suddenly veered off course. Air traffic controllers in Cleveland noticed the abrupt change and tried to establish contact with the cockpit, but there was no response. The controllers soon realized that Flight 93 had been hijacked. Meanwhile, passengers and crew members on board became aware of the unfolding events. Using the plane's airphones and cell phones, they made frantic calls to loved ones and learned about the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
