Social media fuels our tribal instincts from "summary" of Everything Is F*cked by Mark Manson

In the digital age, our tribal instincts have found a new playground to run wild - social media. These platforms have become the modern-day campfires around which we gather, seeking validation, connection, and a sense of belonging. We carefully curate our online personas, showcasing only the most flattering aspects of our lives in order to attract like-minded individuals to our virtual tribes. Social media has a way of amplifying our tribal instincts, creating echo chambers where our beliefs are constantly reinforced and any dissenting voices are quickly silenced. We surround ourselves with people who think and act like us, forming a self-reinforcing feedback loop that only serves to deepen our tribal allegiances. The algorithms that power these platforms are designed to keep us engaged by showing us content that resonates with our existing beliefs and preferences. This constant validation of our worldview further entrenches us in our tribes, making it increasingly difficult to see beyond our own narrow perspectives. Moreover, the anonymity and distance provided by social media make it easier for us to dehumanize those who belong to different tribes. We become quick to label others as "other" or "enemy", building walls instead of bridges. This tribal mentality can lead to polarization and conflict, as we retreat further into our echo chambers and demonize those who dare to challenge our beliefs.
  1. Social media fuels our tribal instincts by providing a platform for us to connect with like-minded individuals, while simultaneously isolating us from those who hold different views. It reinforces our sense of identity and belonging within our tribes, but at the cost of widening the rifts between us and others. As we continue to immerse ourselves in these virtual tribes, it becomes increasingly important to step back and question the narratives that we are being fed, lest we become prisoners of our own making.
