Beliefs can become destructive when taken to extremes from "summary" of Everything Is F*cked by Mark Manson

In our complex world, beliefs are the fabric that holds societies together. They give us purpose, structure, and meaning. However, like any powerful tool, beliefs can be wielded for good or for ill. When taken to their extremes, beliefs can warp into something dark and destructive, consuming everything in their path. At their core, beliefs are meant to guide us, to help us navigate the world with some semblance of order and predictability. They provide a framework through which we interpret reality and make decisions. But when we cling too tightly to our beliefs, when we refuse to question or examine them, they can calcify into dogma, becoming impervious to reason or evidence. Extremism, in all its forms, is the result of this rigidity. It is the refusal to entertain dissenting views, the rejection of compromise or nuance. Extremism is black and white thinking in a world that is endlessly varied shades of grey. It is the elevation of ideology over humanity, of abstractions over lived experience. When beliefs become dogma, they no longer serve us; we serve them. They demand our unquestioning loyalty, our unwavering commitment. They become the lens through which we view the world, distorting reality to fit their narrow confines. And in their wake, they leave destruction, division, and despair. The danger of extremism lies not only in its impact on individuals, but on entire societies. History is littered with the wreckage of nations torn apart by ideologies taken to their logical extremes. The bloodshed of wars, the oppression of dictatorships, the terror of radicalism – all are the fruits of beliefs run amok. To avoid this destructive path, we must cultivate a healthy skepticism towards our beliefs. We must be willing to question, to doubt, to engage in dialogue with those who see the world differently. We must recognize that our beliefs are not infallible, that they are human constructs subject to error and revision. Only by embracing this humility can we guard against the allure of extremism. Only by acknowledging our fallibility can we prevent our beliefs from morphing into monsters that consume us and those around us. Only by recognizing the inherent complexity of the world can we hope to navigate it with grace and compassion.
