Google searches uncover racial biases from "summary" of Everybody Lies by Seth Stephens-Davidowitz

Google searches offer a unique window into the dark corners of human thought. People are more honest with Google than they are with anyone else, even themselves. They type things into the search bar that they would never admit in polite company. And what they type can be very revealing. One thing that Google searches reveal is the prevalence of racial biases. People may not openly express racist thoughts, but they are more likely to reveal them anonymously on the internet. Studies have found that racial bias is pervasive in society, and Google searches confirm this reality. For example, search data shows that people are more likely to use racist language when searching for information about African Americans compared to other racial groups. Even supposedly progressive areas are not immune to racial biases. In fact, Google searches show that racial biases are often more pronounced in liberal-leaning areas. These areas may have smaller minority populations, leading to less exposure to diversity and more entrenched stereotypes. Additionally, people in these areas may feel the need to overcompensate for their biases by searching for information about racial differences, which can actually reinforce stereotypes rather than challenge them.
  1. Google searches provide a valuable glimpse into the hidden biases that exist in society. By analyzing search data, researchers can gain insights into the prevalence of racial biases, how they vary across different regions and demographics, and how they shape people's attitudes and behaviors. This information can be uncomfortable and unsettling, but it is essential for understanding and addressing the underlying prejudices that persist in society.
