Gender biases are evident in search data. People may be more honest with their Google searches than they are with surveys or even with their friends. This honesty allows us to see what people are really thinking. And what they are really thinking is often very ugly. For example, when people are behind a computer screen, they may feel more comfortable expressing their true feelings about gender. This can reveal some uncomfortable truths about society. Women are often the target of these biases. Men are more likely to search for jokes mocking women while women are more likely to search for jokes mocking men. This shows a difference in how each gender perceives and represents the other. Men may feel threatened by women gaining power in society, leading to more negative searches about women.
