Resolve hardware conflicts from "summary" of Essential Computer Hardware by Kevin Wilson

Hardware conflicts can cause computer systems to become unstable and slow. To resolve these issues, it is important to identify and address the underlying causes. Depending on the complexity of the problem, this can involve updating drivers, swapping out components, and other troubleshooting steps.
  1. To ensure your computer works properly, identifying and resolving any hardware conflicts is important. A hardware conflict occurs when two devices connected to the same computer are trying to use the same resources.

  3. The easiest way to resolve hardware conflicts is usually to remove any conflicting drivers or devices from the system. Conflicts may also be resolvable by updating the driver that came with the original device.
  4. In a busy office setting, it's possible that one or more computer systems can face conflicts due to nearby peripherals competing for bandwidth on the same network. Move these devices further away, and check for improved performance.
  5. One way to test if your new peripheral is causing problems is by disabling it in Device Manager, and then checking to see whether the issue persists. If you’ve identified an area of the system where a conflict exists, you'll need to take steps to fix it.
  6. Ensure all other active devices are running up-to-date versions of their respective drivers. Outdated drivers can often cause slow downs and unreliable connections that lead to conflicts between different pieces of hardware.
  7. When attempting to work out which device is causing the problem, try temporarily disconnecting one piece of hardware from the system and seeing whether the issue disappears.
  8. Happily, once you've isolated the cause of the problem and completed the necessary steps to solve the issue you can continue working with all your connected devices without further conflict.
