Comparison between cyclic and inflationary universe models from "summary" of Endless Universe by Paul J. Steinhardt,Neil Turok

The cyclic and inflationary universe models are two competing theories attempting to explain the origin and evolution of the universe. In the cyclic model, the universe undergoes an endless cycle of expansion and contraction, with each cycle lasting billions of years. This theory suggests that the universe has no beginning or end, but instead goes through an infinite series of Big Bangs and Big Crunches. On the other hand, the inflationary model proposes that the universe underwent a rapid period of expansion in the early stages of its existence. This rapid expansion, known as cosmic inflation, is believed to have smoothed out the universe and left behind the cosmic microwave background radiation that we observe today. Unlike the cyclic model, the inflationary model suggests that the universe had a definite beginning and will continue to expand indefinitely. One key difference between the two models lies in their predictions about the overall structure of the universe. The cyclic model predicts that the universe should exhibit certain patterns of temperature fluctuations on large scales, which could potentially be observed in the cosmic microwave background...
