Nationalism may pose a threat to the end of history from "summary" of End of History and the Last Man by Francis Fukuyama
Nationalism, in its essence, is the belief in the inherent superiority of one's own nation above all others. It is a powerful force that has shaped history, leading to conflicts, wars, and the rise and fall of empires. In the context of the end of history, nationalism may pose a threat to the realization of a universal and peaceful global order. The idea of the end of history posits that the evolution of human societies has culminated in liberal democracy as the ultimate form of government. This progression towards a universal system of governance seemed inevitable after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the triumph of Western liberal democracy. However, nationalism can disrupt this trajectory by emphasizing the primacy of the nation-state over global cooperation and integration. Nationalism often promotes a sense of exclusivity and exceptionalism, which can lead to xenophobia, protectionism, and isolationism. Instead of embracing the interconnectedness of the world and working towards common goals, nationalist movements seek to prioritize their own nation's interests above all else. This narrow focus on national identity can hinder the establishment of a truly global community based on shared values and mutual respect. Moreover, nationalism tends to breed resentment towards other nations and cultures, fueling mistrust and animosity. This can result in conflicts and tensions that undermine the prospects of lasting peace and cooperation among nations. In a world where nuclear weapons and other destructive capabilities are widespread, the resurgence of nationalism poses a grave threat to international stability and security.- The challenge of nationalism lies in reconciling the desire for national identity and sovereignty with the need for global solidarity and cooperation. Finding a balance between these two competing impulses is essential for overcoming the obstacles that nationalism presents to the end of history. Only by transcending narrow nationalist interests and embracing a broader vision of humanity can we hope to achieve a peaceful and prosperous future for all.
