Synchronous counters, on the other hand, use a common clock signal and are faster and more reliable. Counters can be designed using flip-flops, with each flip-flop representing a different bit of the counter. For example, a 4-bit counter would use four flip-flops. The output of each flip-flop is connected to the clock input of the next flip-flop, creating a ripple effect that counts up or down depending on the design.
