Nonverbal cues play a significant role in communication from "summary" of Effective Communication Skills by Angelina Zork

Nonverbal cues are a crucial component of communication. They go beyond the words we speak and provide valuable information about our thoughts, feelings, and intentions. In fact, research has shown that nonverbal cues can make up as much as 93% of the overall message being communicated. This means that our body language, facial expressions, gestures, tone of voice, and even our posture play a significant role in how our messages are perceived by others. When we communicate, we often focus on the words we are saying and neglect the impact of our nonverbal cues. However, these cues can sometimes speak louder than words. For example, someone may say they are feeling fine, but their slumped posture and downcast eyes may indicate otherwise. In this way, nonverbal cues can provide important insights into a person's true emotions and attitudes. Nonverbal cues can also help to reinforce or contradict the verbal message being conveyed. For instance, a speaker may say they are excited about a new project, but their monotone voice and lack of eye contact may suggest otherwise. In this case, the nonverbal cues are sending a different message than the words being spoken, leading to potential confusion or misunderstanding. Furthermore, nonverbal cues can also help to regulate the flow of conversation. They can signal when it is our turn to speak, show that we are listening attentively, or indicate that we are in agreement with what is being said. Without these cues, communication can become disjointed and less effective.
  1. Nonverbal cues are an essential aspect of communication that should not be overlooked. By paying attention to these cues and being mindful of our own nonverbal behavior, we can enhance our ability to connect with others, convey our messages more effectively, and build stronger relationships.
