Growing up in the mountains of Idaho, I never had the luxury of easy access to education or medical care. In a household where the government was seen as an enemy and modern medicine was viewed with suspicion, my family's isolation was not just physical, but also intellectual and emotional. Instead of attending school, my siblings and I were expected to work in our father's junkyard, risking our lives in the name of self-reliance and independence. Without the guidance of trained teachers or doctors, we were left to fend for ourselves in a world that was increasingly complex and unforgiving. When accidents or illnesses struck, we had no choice but to rely on home remedies and folk wisdom, hoping against hope that our makeshift solutions would be enough to keep us alive. The lack of proper education and medical care not only limited our opportunities for personal growth and intellectual development but also put our very lives at risk on a daily basis.
