Protein sources matter from "summary" of Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy by Walter Willett
The types of protein we eat are important. Some protein sources come with a package of unhealthy fats or other unhealthy components, while others come with a package of healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial components. For example, red meat is high in protein, but it also contains saturated fats, which are linked to heart disease. On the other hand, fish, nuts, and beans are also high in protein, but they come with healthy fats and other beneficial nutrients. It's not just about the quantity of protein we consume, but also the quality. Plant-based sources of protein are generally healthier than animal-based sources. Plant proteins are associated with lower risks of heart disease and cancer, and they are also more sustainable for the environment. Animal proteins, on the other hand, are often linked to higher risks of heart disease and cancer. This doesn't mean you have to completely eliminate animal protein from your diet, but it does mean you should be mindful of the sources and quantities of animal protein you consume. When choosing protein sources, it's important to consider the whole package of nutrients that come along with the protein. For example, fatty fish like salmon not only provide high-quality protein but also omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for heart health. Nuts and seeds are another great source of protein that come with healthy fats, fiber, and other beneficial nutrients. By choosing protein sources that are rich in healthy fats and other beneficial components, you can optimize your overall health and reduce your risk of chronic diseases.- The quality of the protein sources we consume matters just as much as the quantity. By choosing plant-based sources of protein and animal proteins that are low in unhealthy fats, we can improve our overall health and reduce our risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer. So next time you're planning your meals, think about the whole package of nutrients that come along with your protein choices.
