Building relationships across cultural divides from "summary" of Dreams from My Father by Barack Obama

The idea of reaching out across lines of tribe and race and religion to form alliances that helped us achieve our goals was not new to me. I had learned this lesson many years before, during my time in Indonesia. In that country, I had seen how people of different backgrounds and beliefs could come together to work towards a common purpose, despite their differences. One particular experience stood out to me during my time in Indonesia. I had been living in a rural village, where the people were largely Muslim. As a Christian, I was initially unsure of how I would be received by the community. However, I soon realized that our shared humanity was more important than our religious differences. I found that by taking the time to listen to their stories and understand their perspectives, I was able to build meaningful relationships with the people around me.
