Use differential reinforcement to encourage desired behaviors from "summary" of Don't Shoot the Dog! by Karen Pryor
Differential reinforcement is a powerful tool for shaping behavior. It involves rewarding a behavior only when it meets a certain criterion, while ignoring or even punishing the behavior when it does not. This method is highly effective in encouraging desired behaviors because it provides clear feedback to the individual about what is expected of them. By using differential reinforcement, you are essentially teaching the individual what behaviors will result in a positive outcome. This helps to increase the likelihood that they will continue exhibiting those behaviors in the future. For example, if you want to encourage a child to say "please" when asking for something, you can provide positive reinforcement (such as praise or a small reward) only when they remember to use the polite word. On the other hand, if the child forgets to say "please," you can simply ignore the request or provide a neutral response. This lack of reinforcement for the undesired behavior sends a clear message to the child that saying "please" is what will get them what they want. Over time, the child will learn to consistently use the polite word in order to receive positive reinforcement. It is important to be consistent in applying differential reinforcement in order for it to be effective. Make sure to only reward the desired behavior and not inadvertently reinforce the undesired behavior. Additionally, be patient and give the individual time to learn and adjust their behavior based on the feedback they receive.- Using differential reinforcement is a positive and effective way to encourage desired behaviors in individuals. By providing clear feedback and reinforcement for the behaviors you want to see more of, you can help shape and maintain positive behavior patterns in those around you.
