Discipline is a nonnegotiable element of achievement from "summary" of Discipline Is Destiny by Ryan Holiday
Discipline is not some optional extra that we can choose to sprinkle on top of our goals. It is not a nice-to-have quality that we can decide to pick up whenever we feel like it. No, discipline is the very foundation upon which all achievements are built. Without discipline, our goals remain nothing more than idle dreams, floating aimlessly in the winds of indecision and procrastination. When we lack discipline, we allow ourselves to be swayed by every passing distraction that comes our way. We give in to the siren call of instant gratification, forsaking our long-term goals for the fleeting pleasures of the moment. We become prisoners of our own impulses, slaves to our desires and whims. And in the end, we are left with nothing but regret and disappointment, wondering why we never managed to accomplish what we set out to do. But when we embrace discipline, everything changes. We become the masters of our own fate, the captains of our own ship. We no longer drift along with the currents of chance, but chart our own course with purpose and determination. We are able to resist the temptations that would lead us astray, staying true to our goals even when the going gets tough. And in the end, we find ourselves standing on the summit of our achievements, looking out at the world below with a sense of pride and satisfaction.- The driving force that propels us towards our goals and dreams. For in the end, it is discipline that separates the ordinary from the extraordinary, the mediocre from the magnificent. And it is discipline that ultimately determines our destiny.
