Difficult women challenge the status quo from "summary" of Difficult Women by Roxane Gay

Difficult women are a breed apart. They are not content to simply accept the world as it is handed to them. They question, they push back, they demand more. They challenge the status quo simply by existing, by refusing to conform to society's expectations of how they should behave or who they should be. These women are unafraid to speak their minds, to assert their own desires and needs. They do not shy away from conflict, from confrontation. They are not afraid to be seen as "difficult" because they understand that being difficult is often synonymous with being powerful. Difficult women are a threat to the established order because they refuse to be subdued. They refuse to be silenced. They refuse to be controlled. They are a reminder that women are not meant to be meek and mild, that they are not second-class citizens to be patronized and placated. By standing up for themselves, by demanding to be treated as equals, difficult women force those around them to confront their own biases and prejudices. They force society to reckon with the ways in which it has marginalized and oppressed them. They force change simply by being who they are. Difficult women are not always easy to love or to understand. They can be abrasive, they can be demanding, they can be uncompromising. But they are necessary. They are essential. They are the ones who push us all to be better, to do better, to strive for a more just and equitable world. Difficult women are not content to simply accept the world as it is handed to them. They are the ones who challenge the status quo, who refuse to be silenced, who demand more. And in doing so, they change the world around them.
