Critical thinking is essential in the face of virtue tyranny from "summary" of Dictatorship of Virtue by Richard Bernstein
In our current cultural and political climate, there is a growing tendency towards what can be described as "virtue tyranny." This term refers to the imposition of a particular set of virtuous beliefs and values on society as a whole, often enforced through social pressure, censorship, or even legislation. While the pursuit of virtue is certainly a noble endeavor, the danger arises when this pursuit becomes coercive and intolerant of dissenting viewpoints. In the face of virtue tyranny, critical thinking becomes more important than ever. Critical thinking is the ability to objectively analyze and evaluate information, arguments, and beliefs in order to make informed decisions. It involves questioning assumptions, examining evidence, and considering alternative perspectives. In a society dominated by a single set of virtuous beliefs, critical thinking serves as a vital counterbalance, allowing individuals to resist conformity and challenge prevailing dogmas. Without critical thinking, individuals are vulnerable to manipulation and indoctrination. They are more likely to accept unquestioningly the dominant virtues of the day, regardless of their merit or consequences. Critical thinking, on the other hand, enables individuals to resist propaganda and think for themselves. It fosters intellectual independence and autonomy, empowering individuals to make choices based on reason and evidence rather than social pressures. Moreover, critical thinking promotes intellectual diversity and open discourse, both of which are essential for a healthy democracy. In a society where only certain virtues are deemed acceptable, dissenting voices are marginalized or silenced. Critical thinking allows for the free exchange of ideas and opinions, challenging the status quo and fostering intellectual growth. It encourages individuals to engage in respectful debate and dialogue, even when faced with vehement opposition.- Critical thinking is a safeguard against the dangers of virtue tyranny. By encouraging individuals to think critically about the virtues they are being asked to uphold, it helps prevent the erosion of civil liberties and the stifling of dissent. In a society where critical thinking is valued and encouraged, virtue can be pursued in a way that is truly meaningful and authentic, rather than imposed from above.
