Democracy cannot thrive in a culture of fear and division from "summary" of Democracy Matters by Cornel West
The foundation of any thriving democracy is a culture of courage and unity. Fear and division erode the very essence of democratic values and principles, leaving a society vulnerable to manipulation and oppression. When individuals are consumed by fear, they become passive and compliant, allowing those in power to dictate the terms of their existence. In a culture of fear, dissent is stifled, and critical thinking is suppressed. The voices of the marginalized and oppressed are silenced, as they are made to feel powerless and insignificant. Division further exacerbates this sense of powerlessness, as individuals are pitted against each other based on superficial differences rather than united in their common humanity. Democracy requires a collective commitment to justice, equality, and solidarity. It thrives when individuals are willing to confront their fears and stand together in the face of adversity. This requires a level of moral and spiritual courage that transcends self-interest and immediate gratification. When fear and division reign, democracy becomes a facade, a mere illusion of governance by the people. True democracy demands an active and engaged citizenry, willing to challenge the status quo and demand accountability from those in power. It requires a culture of dialogue and debate, where diverse perspectives are welcomed and respected.- The health of a democracy is measured by the strength of its social bonds and the resilience of its institutions. A culture of fear and division weakens these bonds and undermines the very fabric of democratic society. Only through a collective commitment to courage and unity can we safeguard the future of democracy and ensure a more just and equitable world for all.
